Macrobiotics Overview

Macrobiotics has been an inspiration for such a long time and developed in so many parts of the world that it inevitably means many different things to different people. To some it is a healthy way of loosing weight, staying slim and looking good, to others it could be part of programme to recover from a serious illness. You will meet people who love the philosophy and the way macrobiotics helps connect them to nature, others will revel in its deep spiritual side and for some the foods just taste delicious and that's enough.

Along the road macrobiotics has acquired and developed a huge body of knowledge regarding food and health built on the personal experience and research of thousands of people.

As macrobiotics is such a broad subject you can take from it the parts that most appeal to you. Perhaps start by trying out the foods and see how you feel. Over time you can explore deeper levels, for example the healing energy of different foods, there is always something new to keep you interested.

In whatever form macrobiotics is practiced it embraces the influence food can have on our health, emotions and spirit. Again you will discover that even the foods will vary depending on whom you speak to. One person using macrobiotics to help heal him or herself might see it as a clean, purist diet eating from simple food lists that contain all the most healing ingredients, some use it to de-tox, eating like a Zen monk for a while, whilst another may simply use the principle of yin and yang to define his or her diet.

Equally macrobiotic eating can easily take on the hue of traditional Japanese, Mediterranean or Asian eating styles. In fact the macrobiotic principles can be applied to the cuisine of any culture. You could say macrobiotics is made up of the foods eaten by the healthiest societies from around the world.

What all macrobiotic enthusiasts agree on his that at the heart of the macrobiotic diet are whole, unprocessed, living foods. These would include a great variety of vegetables, whole grains such as; brown rice, barley, quinoa, oat groats and corn on the cob, dried beans including; lentils, chickpeas and aduki beans, fruits, seeds, nuts and naturally fermented foods.

In this form macrobiotics passes all the modern tests for healthy eating. It can easily be slightly alkaline forming, high in potassium, low in saturated fats, high in mono-unsaturated oils, low in terms of the glycaemic index and load, full of nutrients and vital with living energy.

Macrobiotics is so flexible, vegans and vegetarians as well as people who enjoy food combining can adopt it. It can easily be adapted for any food allergy or digestive disorder.
